Laguna Beach – A recent Mother’s Day crash left a 31-year-old mother dead. The crash occurred in Laguna Beach at approximately 12:30 am, The Associated Press reports.

The woman, who has been identified as Sandra Maldonado of Mission Viejo, was driving with her children, ages 5 and 8, when she was sideswiped by another vehicle that was traveling in the opposite direction. Both cars reportedly spun out of control afterward.

Rescuers had to cut Maldonado out of the vehicle. She was subsequently transported to a hospital where she was pronounced dead. Her children were released to family members after being treated for minor injuries.

The 86-year-old driver of the other vehicle was in critical condition at the time of the AP report.

Capt. Jason Kravetz stated of the accident, “For an unknown reason, one of the two veered out of its traffic lane… We don't know which one it is.”

Kravetz further stated that neither alcohol or speed appear to have been factors in the accident.
