Massachusetts – Former NFL player Aaron Hernandez was convicted Wednesday of first-degree murder. The 25-year-old, who was once signed to a $40 million contract with the New England Patriots, was found guilty of killing his one time friend Odin Lloyd in 2013 and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole.

According to a law enforcement source quoted by CNN, Hernandez stated while being taken to state prison from the courthouse, “They got it wrong… I didn't do it.”

The jury in the case deliberated for over 35 hours during the course of a seven-day period. Jurors also found Hernandez guilty of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.

During the trial, which began in January, more than 130 witnesses testified for the prosecution.

Lloyd’s mother Ursula Ward, told the court in a victim impact statement, “I forgive the hands of the people that had a hand in my son's murder, either before or after. And I pray and hope that someday, everyone up there will forgive them also.”
