Colorado – Former Colorado police chief Mark Beckner who headed the investigative team working on the 1996 death case of child beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey, recently suggested the case had been mishandled. As reported by USA TODAY, Beckner commented on his views about the case online, also suggesting that the local district attorney’s office had misstepped at the time.

Beckner stated in part during the online interview, “I wish we would have done a better job of securing and controlling the crime scene on day one… We also should have separated John and Patsy and gotten full statements from them that day. Letting them go was a big mistake, as they soon lawyered up and we did not get to formally interview them again until May of 1997, five months after their daughter was murdered.”

The retired chief subsequently expressed in an additional interview some regret in making the comments, after they had been widely publicized.

Beckner is quoted as stating in a follow up interview with the Boulder based Daily Camera newspaper, “I talked to the organizer, and my impression was that this was a members-only type group that talked about unsolved mysteries all around the world.”
