California – Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and wife Priscilla Chan have made possibly the largest single donation to a public hospital in history. The couple recently donated $75 million to San Francisco General Hospital.

Chan, who is a pediatrician, worked at San Francisco general hospital for several years as part of her residency. This is perhaps what led the couple to make the large donation.

According to WebProNews, the hospital foundation released this statement by Chan, “Day in and day out, I witness the compassion and dedication of my colleagues as they work tirelessly to deliver the best available care to all of our patients.” Chan went on to say, “Mark and I are proud to support such an important public hospital.”

In a separate statement, Zuckerberg said, “We are so fortunate that our work in connecting the world through Facebook has given us the ability to give back to our local community, our country and the world–and to work to improve education, health care and Internet access for everyone. To serve our community in San Francisco, we can think of no better place to focus than The General.”

The hospital is in the process of renovating and plans to add a nine-story, 453,000-square foot main hospital and new trauma center. The plan is to open in December.

As further noted in the report, the hospital will be renamed the Priscilla and Mark Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center.
