Los Angeles – “Modern Family” star Sarah Hyland recently opened up about ending her abusive relationship with Matthew Prokop after he allegedly choked her and made threats to harm her dog.

Hyland, who filed a restraining order against her ex, is quoted as stating during a sit down interview with Meredith Vieira, “People have to go through things in order to become the person that they are today… And that’s that.”

Viera further stated that she had experienced “something similar” in her past when she was the same age as the 23-year-old. When asked how she was handling moving forward, Hyland stated of literary quotes that have helped her in dealing with the issue, “There are two quotes that I want to say. One is a Dylan Thomas poem, ‘Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light,’ which is one of my favorite poems… It just strikes a chord in me. And also Robert Frost’s ‘The only way out is through.’”

Hyland and Prokop dated for five years prior to their breakup in August.
