U.S. – New research suggests that some rapid weight loss diets can have benefits, despite the long-held belief that gradual diets are better. As reported by WebProNews, a study recently published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology journal found that with people who are obese, rapid weight loss may lead to a more substantial amount of weight lost.

Researchers examined the weight loss of 200 obese adults who were placed on two separate diets, and found that those placed on the less gradual diet were more likely to reach the outlined weight loss goal.

Katrina Purcell, co-author of the study and a dietitian at the University of Melbourne, is quoted as stating of the findings, “Global guidelines recommend gradual weight loss for the treatment of obesity, reflecting the widely-held belief that fast weight loss is more quickly regained… However, our results show that an obese person is more likely to achieve a weight loss target of 12.5 percent weight loss, and less likely to drop out of their weight loss program, if losing weight is done quickly.”
