London – Novelist John Grisham has apologized after making controversial statements about men who have been imprisoned for child pornography during an interview. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Grisham issued a statement through his publisher Random House saying he regretted making the comments.

Grisham stated during an interview with The Daily Telegraph that prisons in the U.S. were “filled with guys my age. Sixty-year-old white men in prison who have never harmed anybody, would never touch a child.” He went on to criticize the harsh punishments given to some who “got online one night and started surfing around, probably had too much to drink or whatever, and pushed the wrong buttons, went too far and got into child porn.”

Following criticism, Grisham released the statement saying that his remarks, “were in no way intended to show sympathy for those convicted of sex crimes, especially the sexual molestation of children.”
