Washington – Julie Pierson, the US secret service director, resigned following criticism of how recent security lapses at the White House were handled. As reported by The Guardian, Pierson submitted her resignation after appearing before the House of Representatives government oversight committee.

The secret service has also been accused of issuing misleading statements regarding an incident involving an intruder who jumped a fence and entered the White House carrying a knife.

The secret service agency is overseen by the Department of Homeland Security.

Homeland Security secretary, Jeh Johnson is quoted in the report as stating of Pierson’s resignation, “Today Julia Pierson, the director of the United States secret service, offered her resignation, and I accepted it. I salute her 30 years of distinguished service to the secret service and the nation.”
