California – Microsoft has announced that it will be acquiring Mojang, the developer of the Minecraft video game. As reported by Reuters, the technology giant has stated it will be purchasing the Stockholm-based developer of the popular video game for $2.5 billion.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is quoted by Reuters as stating of the acquisition, “Minecraft is more than a great game franchise – it is an open world platform, driven by a vibrant community we care deeply about, and rich with new opportunities for that community and for Microsoft.”

As noted in the report, the three co-founders of Mojang are expected to leave the company to begin new projects. Others on the team; however, will remain and join Microsoft studios.
