U.S. – According to a new study, weight loss may be harder to achieve for those who are poor. As reported by WebProNews, researchers at Concordia University found that financial hardship plays a role in whether many people take steps to lose weight.

The study indicates that individuals with low incomes were less likely to take weight loss steps like cutting sugar from their diet and beginning an exercise program. Lisa Kakinami, lead author of the study, is quoted as stating of the findings, “The message of how to lose weight according to national guidelines may not resonate with those who struggle to pay their bills.”

Researchers also found that not being able to afford costly tools for weight loss was less of a factor than many may presume. Kakinami is further quoted as stating, “Certain methods can be pursued no matter where you are, but the inclination to reduce fat or sweets, exercise, or drink more water was lesser in lower-income households compared to the highest-income households.”

The study has been published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
