China – An earthquake has left over 300 people dead and hundreds more injured in Yunnan province. As reported by CNN, troops participated in rescue operations early this week following the 6.1-magnitude earthquake; however, rainfall and aftershocks presented challenges in locating survivors.

As noted in the report, at least 398 people were stated to have been killed and over 1800 were left injured according to state-run media. The majority of fatalities were stated to have occurred in Zhaotong, Ludian County.

A reported 600 million yuan ($97 million) has been allocated by Beijing for relief efforts.

The White House also recently offered assistance in the relief effort. National Security Council Deputy Spokesperson Bernadette Meehan is quoted by CNN as releasing the statement, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those that lost their lives, those injured or displaced, and all the people of China on this difficult day.”
