U.S. – The missile that brought down a Malaysia Airlines flight near Ukraine last week had reportedly been tracked by the United States. As reported by Yahoo News, a senior administration official stated on Tuesday that U.S. intelligence had followed the missile as it was fired from an area in eastern Ukraine that was controlled by separatists backed by Russia.

The official, who spoke on the basis of anonymity, is quoted in the report as stating to reporters, “We did pick up a launch. We were able to have the ability to track this specific launch… We don’t know that a Russian was operating the system. However, that in no way precludes Russian involvement in the sense that they are the most likely source for this system.”

The official further stated, “We don’t know who literally was operating the system that day… That’s the hardest thing to determine.”
