Dallas – A Texas couple charged after locking their adult son up in an apartment garage says they did so out of fear that he was a threat to the community. As reported by Reuters, Dane Thyssen, 39, and his wife Jenifer Thyssen, 40 of Dripping Springs have been charged with illegal confinement after allegedly forcing their 22-year-old son to remain confined to a shed like structure.

The couple’s son, Koystya, was arrested after allegedly escaping and committing a break in, leading authorities to discover he had been held captive. He reportedly told investigators that he was given a box of food weekly and allowed out of the garage to shower once a week. According to his uncle, he had been adopted 10 years ago from Kazakhstan, and had suffered childhood abuse there.

Rip Collins, an attorney for the couple, is quoted as stating to reporters of their son, “He has a history of sex and abusing children, not only in other countries but in this neighborhood, this community. They had him restrained because of their concerns that other people would be harmed.”

The couple was being held on bail for charges related to Koystya’s confinement. Their son was also being held for the burglary.
