New York – A woman whose father stands accused of conspiring to kill relatives who helped her flee an arranged marriage testified recently against him in court. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Amina Ajmal testified that she and her father Mohammad Ajmal Choudhry had a loving relationship, and he had previously threatened to kill her.

Ajmal, who reportedly fled the marriage in Pakistan with the help of the two relatives killed, is quoted as stating that her father said warning her about wanting out of the marriage, “I don’t want to hear any more complaints about you… I will kill you if you do anything wrong.”

Both father and daughter reportedly began crying when Ajmal, 23, took the stand. She said she had been tricked by her father into visiting Pakistan to be entered into an arranged marriage with a relative there. She escaped and returned to the United States last year, but went into hiding.

Prosecutors drew comparisons in the shooting deaths of the men, who were gunned down in Pakistan, to what are referred to as honor killings, or homicides carried out due to the perception that the victim has dishonored or brought shame to their family.

Choudhry is on trial for murder conspiracy.
