Rio de Janeiro – In accordance with FIFA rules, Uruguayan footballer Luis Suarez could be banned from playing in matches for up to two years over an alleged biting incident. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), FIFA stated Tuesday that it was waiting on a report from Mexican referee Marco Rodriguez prior to evaluating video evidence of the incident.

Some suggest the video; however, could be a significant factor in the determination made about Suarez’s future at the World Cup.

President Sepp Blatter, who went on record supporting the use of the video evidence in such decisions, is quoted by the AP as writing in February in his column in FIFA’s weekly magazine, “Video evidence can contribute greatly to fair play, provided the sport’s disciplinary bodies are prepared to use it — and they should.”

With regard to suspensions, Article 19 of the FIFA code states, “Unless otherwise specified, it may not exceed twenty-four matches or twenty-four months.”
