Boston – Murder charges are still pending against a 102-year-old woman accused of killing her roommate. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Laura Lundquist, who has been diagnosed with dementia, is the oldest murder defendant in Massachusetts’ history.

Lundquist has been held in a psychiatric facility since the 2009 strangling death of her 100-year-old roommate. She was deemed incompetent to stand trial after being charged with second-degree murder.

The son of victim Elizabeth Barrow, Scott, says he has not insisted on Lundquist’s prosecution saying in a recent interview, “It would be like prosecuting a 2-year-old…It’s just an awful thing that happened. How could she be held accountable for this when she’s not in her right mind?”

Gregg Miliote, a spokesperson for Bristol County District Attorney Sam Sutter, is quoted by the AP as stating of the case against Lundquist remaining open, “Ms. Lundquist was deemed incompetent to stand trial, and we are told that is unlikely to change…However, the court is updated on her competency every three months … and if her competency to stand trial should change, the matter would move forward in the courts.”
