Honolulu – A 35-year-old man has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child after jumping from a balcony while holding a baby. As reported by The Huffington Post, Zelig Pickering, who is believed to be the 11-month old’s father, jumped from the second story balcony of an apartment building in Honolulu on Father’s Day.

Authorities charged Pickering with the misdemeanor on Monday.

Darrel Aki, a witness and local resident, is quoted in the report as stating to KHON2 of the incident, “He was up there and he straddled that wall… When he straddled that wall, he jumped down and I guess he was trying to land on [the wall below]… He hit that wall and then he fell [on his back] with the baby.”

According to witnesses, Pickering left the child on the floor following the jump before running away. He was subsequently caught by several witnesses and restrained until police arrived.

The baby was not harmed in the fall.
