Los Angeles – A woman who continued driving after hitting a pedestrian who lay dying on her windshield has been sentenced to prison. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Sherri Lynn Wilkins, 53, was sentenced to 55 years to life on Thursday in connection with her crimes. Wilkins was convicted last year of second-degree murder, hit-and-run, and driving under the influence.

Prosecutors stated that Wilkins’ blood alcohol level had been almost twice the legal limit at the time of the accident that led to the death of 31-year-old Phillip Moreno in 2012. She had driven two miles with Moreno on her windshield before being forced to stop.

Superior Court Judge Henry Hall is quoted by the AP as stating during sentencing, “Ms. Wilkins demonstrated an extraordinary callousness in fleeing the scene and trying to shake Mr. Moreno’s body off her car. This is a callous murder, not an unfortunate act.”
