New York – The number of children being injured by playing in bounce houses is stated to be on the rise. As reported by TIME, safety experts are arguing for a change in safety guidelines regarding the high incidence rate of children being sent to emergency rooms for bounce house injuries.

As noted in the report, a 2012 Center for Injury Research and Policy study found there to have been a 15-fold increase in related injuries from 1995-2010.

One of the causes noted by TIME for the rise in bounce house injuries is the availability of them now in do-it-yourself packages, which parents can set up without professional operation or attendance. Tracy Mehan, a health educator with the Child Injury Prevention Alliance, is quoted as stating of the packages, “You can buy them on the shelf at Costco.”

Most states reportedly do not have strict safety guidelines for bounce house use. Best practices; however, have been outlined by groups such as the Child Injury Prevention Alliance that can be referenced for identifying possible ways to prevent injury.
