Massachusetts – An associate of former NFL player Aaron Hernandez pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder on Tuesday. As reported by Reuters, Carlos Ortiz, 28, was ordered held without bail during his arraignment in Fall River Superior Court.

Ortiz, along with another associate of Hernandez, Ernest Wallace, was indicted in April in connection with the shooting death of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd. Lloyd, who was in a relationship with Hernandez’s fiancée’s sister, was shot five times at close range. Prosecutors allege he and Hernandez got into an argument at a nightclub prior to the killing.

Ortiz’s attorney, John Connors, is quoted as stating of his client after the arraignment, “I’m worried that I have an innocent guy who was along for the ride, and now he faces the most serious charges he could possibly face, somebody who looked up to Aaron Hernandez as a hero, just like everybody in Bristol, Connecticut did.”
