Texas – A Texas family has been awarded nearly $3 million in a landmark case against a natural gas company. As reported by the Los Angeles Times, the civil verdict is speculated to be the first of its kind to be awarded in a fracking case against the corporation.

The family, Robert and Lisa Parr, filed the lawsuit against Aruba Petroleum Inc. in 2011, alleging its drilling was linked to the deaths of their pets and livestock, and caused them years of illness. The company was also sued by other landowners whose cases were resolved with settlements.

Lisa Parr is quoted as stating in a telephone interview about the $2.95 verdict, “I am just overwhelmed…I feel like I am just this little bitty girl, this little family who just beat the biggest, most powerful industry in the world.”

Aruba Petroleum, which is based in Plano, Texas has said it plans to appeal the recent decision.
