San Francisco – An African American teen filed a lawsuit against San Jose State University after allegedly being the target of racial hazing. As reported by Reuters, the teen’s attorney stated that the suit seeking $5 million in damages was filed on Monday.

The claim filed by attorney Carl E. Douglas alleges that university officials failed to protect the teenager from racist pranks and remarks by white students who were his roommates in a shared dorm. The roommates allegedly taunted the then 17-year-old student with acts such as displaying Nazi imagery and threatening him with a golf club.

Douglas is quoted as stating to Reuters, “When there can be this level of bullying at San Jose State University, a bastion of progressive thought, that should be a bellwether for everyone nationwide.

“I want there to be a conversation started by the filing of this claim… there are issues of racial intolerance, of bullying and of harassment running rampant in universities and colleges across this nation.”

The president of the school has reportedly launched multiple investigations into the allegations.
