Houston – Police say approximately 100 people were found in a suspected stash house in Houston. As reported by CBS News, the people found, were presumed to have entered the United States illegally and many may have been part of a human smuggling operation.

According to John Cannon, a spokesman for the Houston Police Department, the house was discovered as authorities searched for a woman and her two children, all of whom had been reported missing on Tuesday.

Those found were reportedly sitting in unkempt conditions in the 1,500 square-foot home, and stated they had been in the house for days. Cannon is quoted as stating of the discovery, “It was just filth, very squalid-like conditions inside. Trash bags with clothing piled as high as you can see… They were very surprised at the numbers of people inside. Some were just sitting on top of one another because there was just no room.”

The missing woman and her two children were found among the group.

An investigation into the matter by Houston police has been handed over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
