Pennsylvania – A Pittsburgh mother who claims eating poppy seeds led to a failed drug test has sued the hospital where she gave birth. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Rachael Devore, 31, who gave birth in June filed a lawsuit against Magee-Women’s Hospital of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center alleging breached doctor-patient confidentiality.

The hospital reportedly turned her failed test results over to a child welfare agency after her urine was tested while she was in labor.

Devore is quoted as stating of the incident, “I just delivered and it’s supposed to be this beautiful, wonderful, happy time and I’m being accused of something that’s completely ridiculous…To be accused of physically and purposely harming your child is a very tough accusation to swallow.”

The lawsuit was filed on Tuesday.

As noted in the report, opiates, which are made from poppies, can lead to false positives on drug tests if the seeds are ingested prior.
