Phoenix – A bill that would allow surprise inspections at abortions clinics in Arizona has advanced in the state legislature. As reported by Reuters, the Arizona House of Representatives approved the Republican-backed measure 34-22 on Tuesday.

The bill would remove a state law provision requiring an administrative warrant by a judge for inspection of licensed clinics in the state. As noted in the report, a warrant is not currently required for the inspection of other types of medical facilities.

Republican Representative Debbie Lesko, who sponsored the bill, is quoted by Reuters as stating, “This is not a pro-life versus pro-choice issue. This is about the healthiness of a facility where a woman goes to get a procedure done…What is it that they have to hide?”

Approval of the bill must still be obtained by the Senate in order for it to move forward to becoming law.
