Olympia, WA – Lawmakers in Washington state have passed a measure that grants eligibility for college aid to students whose parents brought them to the United States illegally. As reported by Reuters, the House passed the bill 75 to 22 on Tuesday.

Democratic Governor Jay Inslee has stated he will sign the measure, which is similar to others that have already been enacted in states like California and Texas.

Inslee is quoted by Reuters as stating, “This bill ensures that the young men and women we’ve invested in at our high schools and who aspire to become productive American citizens will now have fair access to the financial support they need.”

As noted in the report, an estimated 1,000 undocumented immigrants would be eligible for assistance with the $5 million in additional State Need Grant funding included in the bill.
