Tallahassee, FL – A Florida woman whose former boyfriend tricked her into taking an abortion bill is now fighting for the passage of fetal protection laws. As reported by Reuters, Remee Jo Lee spoke to the Senate Judiciary Committee in Florida on Tuesday urging the passage of a measure that would impose criminal penalties for causing women who are pregnant to lose their fetus at any stage of development.

Florida law currently applies only to killing a fetus that is late enough in a pregnancy that survival is possible outside of the womb.

Lee is quoted by Reuters as stating of her experience, “This is the most devastating experience for me. It just never goes away. I deal with this every day of my life…Every day, when I see a changing table in the bathroom, I remember what I’ve lost, I deal with the stress of this thing.”

Lee’s ex-boyfriend, John Welden, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for tricking her into taking the stomach ulcer medication Cytotec, which can induce an abortion. She lost her baby less than 7 weeks into her pregnancy. Welden was charged under the federal Unborn Victims of Violence Act due to the restrictions under Florida state law.
