Beijing – A U.S. businessman has been put on trial for alleged gang crimes in China. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), authorities in southern China have accused Vincent Wu of multiple crimes he claims he confessed to because he was tortured into doing so. Included on the list of charges are operating illegal casinos.

Since being detained in 2012, Wu has reportedly been denied U.S. consular access. His American citizenship has not been acknowledged by China due to his last entry into the country’s mainland being on his Hong Kong residence pass. Dual nationalities are not recognized by Beijing.

Wu’s daughter, Anna Wu, is quoted by the AP as stating of her father’s case, “We are still very confident because our lawyers have all the evidence to prove that he is innocent… We believe we still have a chance and so we’ll hope for the best.”
