Mooresville, NC – A snake bite victim says a Mooresville hospital charged him $89,000 for an 18-hour hospital stay. As reported by the Charlotte Observer, Eric Ferguson says he was shocked at the amount of the bill he was given after receiving anti-venom treatment at the Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Over $81,000 of the bill was for vials of the anti-venom dose he was administered during his stay. Ferguson and his wife reportedly found significantly lower retail prices for the medicine after conducting a search online.

Although Ferguson’s treatment was covered by insurance provider Blue Cross Blue Shield, and his total bill was reduced by a contractual discount, the couple paid approximately $5,400 in co-pays and for their deductible. The Fergusons say the amount collected by the hospital was twice what senior federal health program Medicare would have paid for the same treatment.

Laura Ferguson is quoted as stating of the issue, “What if it was someone that didn’t have the resources to research and didn’t have insurance?… What is fair and equitable here?”
