Colorado – A six-year-old student was suspended for kissing a classmate on the hand and cheek at school. As reported by the Cañon City Daily Record, Cañon City School District officials defended their decision to suspend the first grader who attends Lincoln School of Science & Technology earlier this week.

The mother of the girl involved posted a message in response to the school’s actions, praising the district for purportedly protecting her daughter “from sexual harassment.”

Jade Masters-Ownbey is quoted in the report as writing in her Facebook post that the boy kissed her child, “Not once, but over and over…not with her permission but sneaking up on her…not without warning and consequences prior to suspension.”

Jennifer Saunders, the mother of the young boy, is quoted as stating in response to the punishment given to her son, “He is 6 years old, and that is absolutely ridiculous for him to have ‘sexual harassment’ on his record, even it is (only on the district’s) record.”

Lincoln Principal Tammy DeWolfe is quoted as stating of the school’s actions, “Our job as a school is to basically maintain a safe learning environment for all children in the school, and that’s certainly what we’re trying to do here.”
