Cleveland – A man convicted in the kidnapping and imprisonment of three women in Cleveland has committed suicide. As reported by Reuters, Ariel Castro, 53, was found Tuesday night after having hanged himself in his cell. He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead after prison medical staff attempted to revive him with CPR.

Castro held Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight captive for a decade before they were found and freed. He received a life sentence plus 1,000 years on August 1 after he pleaded guilty to 937 counts in a deal which allowed him to avoid the death penalty.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio called for state prison authorities to investigate the circumstances of Castro’s death. Executive director Christine Link is quoted by Reuters as saying in a statement, “As horrifying as Mr. Castro’s crimes may be, the state has a responsibility to ensure his safety from himself and others.”
