St. Louis – An Illinois judge has resigned after being charged with heroin possession. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), St. Clair County Circuit Judge Michael Cook announced his plans to step down in a letter to the chief judge in the county John Baricevic.

Cook, 43, pleaded not guilty to charges of heroin possession, and having a gun while illegally using controlled substances. He was charged Friday after findings that the March death of St. Clair County judge, Joe Christ was due to a cocaine overdose. Christ was staying with Cook at his family’s cabin at the time.

Baricevic is quoted by the AP as stating of Cook’s resignation, “I’m not surprised under the circumstances… In one sense, it was a formality, but a very important one. Disciplinary procedures seeking him removed could have taken a very long time.”
