Burkesville, Ky – A toddler was fatally shot by her five-year-old sibling while playing with a rifle given to him last year. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the two-year-old child was killed by a single shot to the chest in the tragic accident that occurred on Tuesday.

The shooting has reportedly been ruled accidental and as indicted by the AP it was not yet clear whether any related charges would be filed.

Cumberland County Judge Executive John Phelps is quoted by the AP as stating of the prevalence of guns in the households of residents in the county, a farming community with a population of about 1,800, “It’s a normal way of life, and it’s not just rural Kentucky, it’s rural America — hunting and shooting and sport fishing. It starts at an early age… There’s probably not a household in this county that doesn’t have a gun.”

Phelps is further quoted as stating of the tragedy, “The whole town is heartbroken… This was a total shock. This was totally unexpected.”
