Washington – Alaska Rep. Don Young has issued a statement following criticism over a racial slur he used in reference to Hispanic migrant workers, whom he called “wetbacks” during a radio station interview, as reported by the Associated Press (AP).

Young is quoted by the AP as saying in his statement issued Thursday that he, “used a term that was commonly used during my days growing up on a farm in central California. I know that this term is not used in the same way nowadays and I meant no disrespect.”

Many called for Young to issue an apology for his comments. Congressional Hispanic Caucus chairman Ruben Hinojosa, D-Texas is quoted by the AP as stating, “Shame on Don Young… It is deeply disheartening that in 2013, we are forced to have a discussion about a member of Congress using such hateful words and racial slurs.”

Young, 79, is the House’s second most senior Republican, as noted in the report.
