Ireland – A council in southwest Ireland has given approval to a controversial measure to approve drunk driving permits for some rural drivers. As reported by The Huffington Post, the Kerry County Council passed the measure five to three, with one councilor suggesting it would help prevent some drivers from “falling into depression.”
Councillor Danny Healy-Rae is quoted in the report as stating to TheJournal.ie, “A lot of these people are living in isolated rural areas where there’s no public transport of any kind, and they end up at home looking at the four walls, night in and night out, because they don’t want to take the risk of losing their licence.”
In order for the measure to be effective the council would be required to petition Justice Minister Alan Shatter for the issuance of special permits.
