Belgium – Twin brothers who were deaf and going blind were euthanized in Belgium last month. As reported by ABC News, the twins, whose names were not publicized, were put to death by lethal injection legally at the Brussels University Hospital in Jette.

The men’s doctor, Dr. David Dufour, is quoted in the report as stating of their decision, “They were very happy. It was a relief to see the end of their suffering.”

A reported over 1,000 people, a majority of whom were terminally ill cancer patients, had doctor assisted deaths in Belgium in 2011. Although the twin’s conditions were not terminal, Belgian law allows doctor-assisted suicides for patients who are suffering and want to end their lives if they are over 18. Lawmakers in the country are seeking an expansion of the law.
