Washington – A gay rights group is challenging comments previously made by former Republican senator Chuck Hagel, who is a top contender for becoming the next Secretary of Defense. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the group called Hagel’s past votes and comments regarding gays “unacceptable.”
Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign, is quoted by the AP as saying in a statement on the issue, “The next secretary of defense must be supportive of open service as well as equal benefits for lesbian and gay military families and Sen. Hagel must address these issues immediately.”
Griffin is further quoted as stating, “Whomever is selected to be the next secretary of defense needs to understand there are clear expectations for progress at the (Defense Department) and that the president’s views on key issues must be reflected by the secretary.”
