London – A new study suggests smoking has damaging effects on the brain. As reported by BBC News, researchers at King’s College London found that in addition to conditions such as high blood pressure and being overweight, lifestyle factors such as smoking can lead to cognitive decline.

Researchers collected data on 8,800 people over the age of 50 for the study.

Dr. Simon Ridley, from Alzheimer’s Research UK, is quoted in the report as stating of the findings, “Research has repeatedly linked smoking and high blood pressure to a greater risk of cognitive decline and dementia, and this study adds further weight to that evidence.”

The study has been published in the Age and Ageing journal.
