Montana – Disbursements for a $3.4 billion U.S. government Indian lawsuit settlement are expected to begin after an almost 17-year legal battle. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), attorneys for the plaintiffs in the case against the U.S. government say the first of the payments could be administered by the end of the year.

The settlement for Native Americans across the U.S. began after a lawsuit was filed in 1996 by Blackfeet leader, Elouise Cobell of Browning, Mont., asserting that Indians saw no profit from the leasing of land for which royalties were purportedly held in a trust by the U.S. government. Cobell died last year of cancer.

In accordance with the settlement, $1.5 billion will be paid to two classes of beneficiaries and an additional $1.9 billion will be used for the purchase of fractionated land allotments by the government.

Lead attorney Dennis Gingold is quoted by the AP as stating of the settlement, “We all are happy that this settlement can finally be implemented… We deeply regret that Ms. Cobell did not live to see this day.”
