Pittsburgh, Pa — A toddler was killed Sunday, November 5, 2012, after African painted dogs that were on exhibit at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium mauled him to death, reports CBS News.

According to the report, the 3-year-old boy fell about 14 feet off the deck into the African painted dogs exhibit. The wild dogs then pounced on the boy and mauled him, leaving him with fatal injuries.

It was unknown at the time of the report why or how the boy fell into the exhibit. Other reports indicated that the boy died as a result of the mauling and not the fall itself.

The identity of the boy is being withheld at this time.

African painted dogs are rare and endangered animals about the size of small German Shepherd.

Investigations are underway.

The zoo is closed until further notice. Officials are calling the death an accident.
