Los Angeles, CA – A driver was pinned in his truck for hours after nine trucks became involved in chain reaction collisions in an Interstate 5 bypass tunnel early Tuesday. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the location of the crashes in the Newhall Pass tunnel was also the site of a fatal fiery crash that had occurred five years prior.

As noted in the report, the collisions began when a driver of a big-rig lost control and jackknifed. Three trucks subsequently slammed into the wreckage, and another five trucks became involved in a second chain-reaction crash soon after.

The pinned driver sustained non-life threatening injuries. Clean up and repair after the collisions cost an estimated $17 million.
