As Americans stumble back into their offices after a long holiday weekend spent picnicking, boating, and having fun, Dallas labor and employment lawyer Keith Clouse directs them to the Department of Labor’s webpage regarding Labor Day 2012. There, readers will be able to learn more about the history of this American holiday.

Labor Day is a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of America. Doubt exists as to who first proposed the idea, but the first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City. In 1884, the first Monday in September was selected for the holiday, and other cities were urged to follow New York City’s example in celebrating a “workingmen’s holiday.” Labor Day became a national legal holiday on the first Monday of September after Congress voted on the matter in 1894. Over one hundred years later, the nation still pays a tribute to the American worker on the first Monday of September.
