San Francisco, CA – A bicyclist in the Climb to Kaiser bicycle ride has died in a bicycle accident. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Nicola Grossi, who lived in Southern California, was killed after hitting a tree when his bicycle went off an embankment.

As noted in the report, the Climb to Kaiser endurance ride is deemed one of the most difficult in the nation. It was stated to be Grossi’s first time participating in the event. He is reportedly the second person to die in the history of the ride.

Ride organizer John Craft is quoted by the AP as stating of the area where the bicycle accident occurred, “This is the hardest part of the course as far as the descent goes… It is a very steep road, with some corners that you gather up speed real quick.”
