Palma de Mallorca – A court in Spain has ordered that an abortion doctor whose failed procedure forced a pregnant mother to carry her child to term pay to support the child. As reported by The Guardian, the Palma de Mallorca court ordered the doctor to pay monthly support for the child until he becomes 25.

The unnamed doctor is stated to have told the 24-year-old mother who attempted to have an abortion in 2010 that she was no longer pregnant after a follow-up test. She gave birth six months later.

Eva Munar, an attorney for the woman, is quoted in the report as stating of the case outcome, “There has never been a case like this before in Spain… We don’t know if it has ever happened anywhere else in the world.”

Munar further noted, “I am just glad the child was born healthy and we didn’t have to bring a different kind of negligence case.”
