Newark, NJ — A sanitation worker was killed Monday morning, January 9, 2012, after he was hit by the garbage truck he was riding on. The fatal work-related accident occurred at 5:43 a.m. near Nye Avenue and Osborne Terrace in Newark’s South Ward, reported NJ.com.

The 38-year-old sanitation worker, Teeshon Small, was reportedly trying to climb onto the back of the garbage truck when he was run over.

Emergency rescue workers rushed to the scene, but Small died from his injuries a half-hour later at the scene.

Charges have not been filed at this time against the driver of the truck, 30-year-old Newark resident Jamal Walker. Police are still investigating how Small died.

Ace Environmental, a private waste management company, who is contracted by the city to collect trash in the South Ward, employed Small.

Investigations into the fatal work-related accident are underway.
