Winter Park, FL — A teenager was killed Monday night, October 24, 2011, when his bicycle crashed into the back of a Winter Park fire truck. The fatal accident occurred on Lakemont Avenue in front of Winter Park Memorial Hospital, just south of Aloma Avenue, reported WESH Orlando.

According to reports, the bicyclist and the fire truck were traveling in the same direction, with the bicycle riding next to the truck on the passenger side. The fire truck started to make a left turn, and the bicyclist was hit and became trapped under its wheels.

The bicyclist was identified as Cullen Detamore, of Winter Park.

Responding emergency crews rushed Detamore to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“He lost control of the bicycle, went down, slid under the fire truck,” said FHP Sgt. Raymong Koenig said to WESH. “The fire engine ran over him. It didn’t come to a rest on top of him, but (he) was partially under the truck when the truck stopped.”

Investigators reported that Detamore tried to avoid the collision, but couldn’t because it appears the bike did not have any breaks and Detamore didn’t have many options.

Officials believe Detamore did not obey the traffic laws at the time of the accident.

The FHP reported that the driver of the fire truck, Ronald Ryan, 51, would not be charged in connection with the fatal crash.
