New York, NY — An elevator repairman died Friday morning, September 23, 2011, when he fell 10-stories while working on a disabled lift. The fatal workplace accident took place in a Garment District building on W. 38th St. at around 10 a.m., reported New York Daily News.

According to authorities, the 44-year-old man apparently lost his balance for unknown reasons, which caused him to plunge 10-stories down an elevator shaft in the building.

Responding FDNY emergency crews reported that the man was in cardiac arrest when he was rushed via an ambulance to Bellevue University Hospital for medical treatment. After arriving at the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The identity of the victim is being withheld at this time.

The fatal workplace accident is under investigation. No violations have reportedly been issued as a result of the accident, reported a city Buildings Department spokesperson. Investigators with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are expected to arrive at the scene to conduct their own investigation.
