Training Accident at North Woodmere Park Injured 4 NY Firefighters

Nassau County, NY — Training exercises at the North Woodmere Park Fire Training Facility Tuesday night, August 30, 2011, left four firefighters with injuries when a drill team truck was involved in an accident, reported Patch.com.

Nassau County detectives reported that the Elmont Fire Department drill team was holding a training session using a drill team truck, when the truck swerved to the left and hit a wooden guardrail.

Four drill team members were on the rear step of the truck, holding onto the grip bar when the accident occurred.

The impact of the crash sent two male firefighters, ages 23 and 25, over the guardrail. Two other firemen, ages 20 and 26, were ejected onto the roadway.

The 23-year-old fireman sustained abrasions, contusions and a neck injury in the accident, while the 25-year-old sustained abrasions and contusions to his body.

The 20-year-old male suffered a chest injury, abrasions and contusions. The 26-year-old male suffered a serious head injury, as well as multiple abrasions and contusions to his body.

The four injured men were transported to area hospitals for treatment of their injuries.

The male driver of the drill truck was not injured in the wreck.

Investigations into the training accident are underway.
