Illinois Work Accident: Natural Gas Pipeline Co. Plant Explosion Injures 5

Herscher, IL — An explosion at a northeastern Illinois plant injured five people Tuesday, August 16, 2011. The blast occurred just before 10 a.m. at Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America in Herscher, reported CanadianBusiness.com.

According to police, the explosion occurred during routine maintenance work in the main compressor building. The workers were reportedly doing a welding job when the blast occurred.

A flash fire occurred as a result of the explosion, but it was immediately extinguished.

Responding emergency crews rushed three people to Riverside Medical Center for treatment of injuries. Two of the victims suffered minor injuries and the third victim was airlifted to a burn unit at Loyola University in Maywood.

Two others were taken to Provena St. Mary’s Hospital in Kankakee.

By Tuesday afternoon, four of the five injured workers were released from hospitals. The fifth victim is listed in stable condition.

Investigations into the plant explosion are underway. The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are expected to look into the explosion as well.
