Man Killed in Apparent Industrial Accident at Fairfax Gravel Pit

Fairfax, MN — An industrial accident killed a 24-year-old man Tuesday, August 9, 2011, after he became trapped in a moving conveyor belt. The fatal industrial accident occurred in a gravel pit along 610th Avenue, southwest of Fairfax at about noon, reported the West Central Tribune.

According to the Renville County Sheriff’s Office, a worker became entangled in a conveyor belt in a gravel pit. The 911 caller reported that the victim had sustained an amputation.

Fairfax Ambulance, Fairfax Fire Department, North Ambulance-Redwood Falls, North Air Care helicopter and the Renville County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene of the industrial accident, where they found the victim no longer trapped in the machinery. He was breathing, but did not have a pulse.

Although emergency medical crews tried to resuscitate the victim, their efforts did not prove successful and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The identity of the victim is currently being withheld.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Renville County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the fatal industrial accident.
